The Cattery

All our cats lives in the house together with us, no one is ever caged och kept away from the rest of the family. Unfortunately we do not have an outdoor run for them yet, there has been to much else to do around the house since we moved. But, now our neuteres can run free as they like, so for the moment we have only three cats living permanently indoors. We do have a balcony where they can spend time outside when we are at home.

When we have kittens in the house, they normaly stay in our bedroom for the first 4 weeks. After that we move them to the kitchen, and a few weeks later they are all around the house! That means that our kittens get an early contact with all the other cats, our dog, children, visitors and everything that goes on in a house.

In my breeding I try to concentrate my efforts of breeding kittens with a good temper, which will make it easy for them to adjust to their new homes. We train clawcutting, combing and bathing, going by car, meeting other people, dogs and animals, and other things that will make them ready to meet the big world when they finally are at least 12 weeks old.

The cats has to be healty, I deworm them at least two times beforde they move from us to their new homes. I take them to the vet. to be vaccinated against catpleague and flu. Of course they are accompanied with a certified pedigree from SVERAK and a fresh health-certificate when they leave.

During the last years there has been lots of information about two serious diseases, affacting our breed among others. That is Hip Dysplasia and Hyfertrophic Cardiomyapathi, an heart disease. I x-ray the hips on all my females before breeding them, and all of them have had their hearts checked by a specialist at least one time from 1998 and later on. I have been lucky, all hips have been fine, and the specialist has found no signs of HCM at my cats at the times he has examined them. And I only use males that are examined as well.

Of course the kittens also have to look like a maine coon, after what the standards says! But my cats are a bit "old-fashioned", both by looks and lines, which I am very proud of. Many extreme typed maine coons bred today do not have the look that they had when I got to know this breed. I like to preserve the old looks, rather then "building" something extreme, just to make a difference to the norweigan forestcat and siberian cats. And I do put their temperament and health in the first room, as they all in first hand will become loving pets 365 days per year. If they become good breeding animals, or get lucky in the showrings, I see it more like a bonus.

If we talk a bit about colours, I guess I can say that I have concentrated in classic tabbies in the colours brown, red and tortie, preferable with nice, irregular white spots. Every now and then a cream och blue turns up to, or a solid kitten.

Now you can take a look at the rest of my pages, where you can find some information about our family, kittens rasied in my home, elderly cats and more. Some pages content lots of photos, so please be patioent while loading!
